NO.16 MOTORWAY POLICE PATROL CAR

Impy Version (1966-1968) / Flyers Version (1969-76)

Every toy car range needs a police car! In addition to being a guaranteed good seller, it was usually just a case of simply adapting an existing casting to give a new police model. Lone Star initially used its No.14 Ford Zodiac Mk.III Estate followed by the No.12 Chrysler Imperial (presumably aimed at the American market). Both models were modified to take a plastic roof beacon and of course had ‘Police’ printed across the bonnet. Both the Zodiac and Imperial were issued as Impy and then Flyers models.

There are a number of rare foreign police cars. The Impy Imperial was issued in very dark blue with ‘Politie Auto’ lettering for the Dutch market. A later Flyers version also exists although this was now finished in black with just ‘Politie’ lettering.

For Germany the No.17 Mercedes casting was used to give an Impy Polizei version finished in a very dark green. An example of the Polizei Mercedes has also been seen in white and was probably a production error. There was no Flyers version of the Polizei Mercedes.

The Mercedes was also issued with ‘Polis’ lettering for the Swedish market. Again this was very dark green and only available as an Impy model.

These foreign models are some of the hardest Impy/Flyers cars to find.
