In 1972 Lone Star finally gave its Impy commercial range some long overdue attention. The trio of attractive Foden S24 cab lorries (Nos, 24, 26 and 29) had been the only lorries in the range for the previous 5 years. 1972 saw the introduction of new ‘Commercials’ branding and more excitingly two new lorry cabs. These were the Foden S50 (introduced on No. 42 Tilcon Half Cab) and a Leyland cab based on the revolutionary prototype gas turbine lorry. This Leyland cab was initially paired with a new flatbed body to give two new models: No.41 Builders Supply Lorry (carrying a load of plastic girders) and No.44 Marine Transport Lorry (carrying a plastic speedboat taken from the Tuf-Tots range).
Both the Foden S50 half cab and Leyland cab were designed to fit Lone Star’s existing 8 wheel chassis already used for the Foden S24 models.
In 1975 Lone Star introduced some cost-cutting measures to the range by replacing a number of the 8-wheel lorries with shorter 6-wheel versions. No.41 Builders Supply Lorry and No.44 Marine Transport Lorry both continued in the range but now based on the new 6-wheel chassis. The 6-wheel chassis could take either the Leyland cab or Foden half cab. At this time several new lorry bodies were added to the range plus two new models were created by simply introducing new loads for the 6-wheel flatbed. No.43 carried four ‘water pipes’ whilst No.45 carried two ‘giant connecting watermain pipes’.
The four 6-wheel flatbed models could be issued with either cab although Lone Star tended to standardise on one cab per model. Nos. 41 and 45 were usually issued with the Foden Half Cab whilst Nos, 43 and 44 were nearly always Leylands.
In 1976 the whole range was replaced by a range of low-cost generic trucks (See Impy Super Models page).
